Welcome to the Tennessee Volunteer Militia blog site. I will post information here that may be of interest to anyone studying the life, times, and campaigns of the Tennessee Volunteer Militia during the late 18th and early 19th Centuries. This is an often neglected time period of American history, particularly in the South. However this period was an important one in the formation of our country. The post-revolutionary years were a period of rapid growth and expansion. The ideas of Manifest Destiny nurtured by the English, Scots-Irish, and Germans during the colonial era found their expression in the early years of our Republic. Of course the main players on this stage were the Native people who had occupied these lands for thousands of years. Through trade, treaties, intermarriage, war and peace, both sides had been forever altered by over two hundred years of contact.
My hope is that this page will become a place for exchange of information and ideas concerning our shared history of this time period. I have a special interest in material culture, what I like to call nuts and bolts history, so much of what I share will be this type of information. I am new to creating a blog so please be patient while I sort things out. Thank you for your interest and here's hoping we can learn together. Cheers!
